High Altitude Training

What is High Altitude Training?

High Altitude Training is a strategic approach embraced by athletes and individuals aiming to optimise endurance and performance. This method involves engaging in exercise within environments featuring reduced oxygen levels, typically found at higher altitudes. The thinning of air molecules in such conditions poses a challenge to oxygen absorption. In response, the body undergoes adaptations, including an increase in red blood cell production and improved oxygen-carrying capacity to the working muscles. This adaptive process results in an overall enhancement of performance.

Altitude training can be replicated in our chambers where oxygen levels are adjusted to simulate various altitudes. This allows individuals to reap physiological benefits without the necessity of being at elevated elevations.

Exposure to reduced oxygen environments prompts the body to optimise oxygen utilisation for energy production, leading to enhanced efficiency in the heart, lungs, muscles, and other organs. This adaptation fosters physical and mental adjustments, ultimately promoting more effective and efficient overall performance.

Benefits of High Altitude Training

  • Heightened weight loss and metabolic rate
  • Increased energy and endurance levels
  • Improved aerobic conditioning
  • Enhanced cardiovascular health
  • Increased red blood cell count, improving the body's efficiency in oxygen utilisation
  • Faster recovery and reduced risk of injuries by minimising stress on joints and tendons
  • Stimulates heightened hormone production, facilitating the development of lean muscle mass

Who Can Benefit from Altitude Training?

General Fitness
For individuals pursuing general fitness, Altitude Training offers significant advantages by halving overall workout time. It provides an opportunity to boost metabolism while engaging in low-impact training.

Weight Management
The low-oxygen environment at high altitudes contributes to a higher calorie burn both during and after workouts. Altitude training effectively boosts metabolism, leading to calorie expenditure for up to 72 hours post-workout, making it a valuable tool for weight management.

Athletes
Altitude training delivers substantial fitness, endurance, and performance enhancements for athletes across all skill levels. This includes performance and endurance athletes such as those involved in boxing, running, cycling, and swimming, as well as team sports like football, soccer, basketball, and netball.

Our Rooms

At West Central, we feature two Altitude Training spaces. The boxing room is equipped with two punching bags, a wall punching pad, one free-run curved treadmill, and a stationary bike, while our Runners room is equipped with four treadmills.
